I thought I'd include these simply because I've found most of them very helpful and most of them are freeware or Open Source

Word Processors, etc.
WordPerfect -- not free, but by far my favorite word processor
Treepad -- a simple tree structured word processor and organizer
Spread32 -- a very small and simple spreadsheet program

Programs for the Web
Off-By-One -- an extremely simple, light-weight, lightening fast browser
Firefox -- quickly becoming a high standard for browsers
HTTrack -- a very configurable website copier, for convenient offline viewing
Ad-Aware SE -- a very good program to elliminate adware from your computer
AVG Free Edition -- an excellent anti-virus program

Desktop Utilities
AT Notes -- A fantastic sticky note program
7-Zip -- a phenomenally easy to use zip program
Ashampoo Start-up Tuner -- an amazing program to keep software from launching at startup
Folder Space -- an excellent program to find out how much space everything is taking up
VideoLAN -- a great music and video player
DVDDecrypter -- very good for saving DVDs to your computer for later viewing
WinKey -- a wonderfully easy program launcher, now discontinued, so I've posted here for download

Spirituality
E-Sword -- a very nice program for looking at and comparing different translations of the Bible
MoonPhase -- a small system tray program to let you know the phase of the moon (if you're pagan, it's nice to always know)
Learning the Tarot -- a wonderful downloadable course with which to learn Tarot
